In the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Republican candidate Donald Trump outperformed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris not only in the number of electors he won but also in the popular voting ratio, realizing his return to the White House.That was astonishing given the growing dominance of liberal ideas about major social issues at stake in American society, such as abortion and same-sex marriage, and the continuing rise in the percentage of racial minorities in the population, considered to constitute the Democratic Party's long-standing support base. 2 Trump's Victory Factors: Why Trump Wanted to Be President Again

The 2024 US presidential election was anticipated to be a historically close contest; however, Trump won in seven battleground states.Why did Trump win all seven battleground states and outperform Harris in the nationwide vote despite the prediction of a close race? First of all, why did the majority of voters across the nation vote for Trump, who refused to admit defeat in the 2020 presidential election for groundless reasons, caused the January 6, 2021 ransacking of the Capitol building by instigating his supporters, and subsequently faced four criminal indictments, one of which resulted in a guilty verdict? （Please see more the SSDP website）

3 Kamala Harris and Factors Behind Her Defeat:Can the Democrats Make a Comeback?

Whether Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election should be considered a landslide victory or a close one varies in nuance depending on the definitions of these words and what his victory this time should be compared with. Although the Democratic Party and Kamala Harris did not allow Trump to win a landslide victory in terms of quantity, they suffered a "decisive" or "complete" defeat qualitatively. （Please see more the SSDP website）

4 American Democracy and Society Viewed from an Analysis of the 2024 US Presidential Election

The recognition that the Republican Party, especially Trump supporters, is jeopardizing American democracy is relatively widely shared in Japan. This is not surprising, given that Donald Trump tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, instigated a mob to attack the Capitol building when the election results had yet to be certified, and said he would not necessarily accept the results of the 2024 presidential election.However, a look at the results of US opinion polls reveals a different reality. For example, a poll survey conducted chiefly by The Washington Post from September 30 to October 15, 2024, in seven swing states reveals the assessment by respondents that Trump is more able to deal with threats to democracy than Kamala Harris (43% vs. 40%). （Please see more the SSDP website）

China is rising and may become a regional hegemon in not-so- distant future. Ascending India and the resurgence of Russia also illustrate the fact that we face a rapid power transition in Asia. Against this backdrop, Japan, as a major regional power, and its security strategy and diplomatic policy will be put to the test. With this in mind, the Society of Security and Diplomatic Policy Studies (SSDP) was founded in October, 2016. The SSDP will also conduct public diplomacy through its research projects. Japanese foreign relations vis-à- vis the neighboring states are likely to mark a new chapter in the near future and therefore, our research endeavors and other activities will be consequential.
